About Mhairi

In a nutshell...

Mhairi is a surgeon working in Edinburgh and also as a volunteer in Africa.   Her book, "The Bright Fabric of Life" tells the tale of a young surgeon becoming involved with treating women afflicted by childbirth injuries called Fistula.  She has lived that experience.

The title of the book refers to a quote by Mhairi at the start of the book:

"Whoever and wherever you are, you stand at the end of a long line of women.  Each born of the one before - with love, with pain, sometimes with loss.  Lines which stretch back and back, beyond the reach of imagination, weaving the bright fabric of our human race."

Mhairi is blessed with two wonderful children, a husband who is a true partner in life, and a very naughty Springer spaniel.  She is involved with various charities: "Uganda Childbirth Injury Fund", "School Lunches for Kamuli", "Fistula Foundation" and "Freedom from Fistula". When she is not working, she loves to climb Scotland's hills and swim in its waters.
